India demand for clean energy

When Grow Wellington - the region's economic development agency - wanted to learn about potential demand for renewable energy technologies in India they turned to India Horizonz for help.

As part of its goal to build the Wellington region's excellence in clean technology, Grow Wellington was particularly interested in exploring export opportunities the Wellington region in a bid to help develop new sectors based on existing capability.

In 2008 they commissioned India Horizonz to prepare a report on the demand for sustainable and renewable energy technologies in India. As well as conducting secondary research, we interviewed key decision makers and thought leaders in India on the need for renewable energy technologies.

Laurence Greig, then General Manager of Grow Wellington's Centre of Excellence programme, said:

"India was 'white space' for Grow Wellington - we were aware that it could be a huge potential market, but we didn't know much about the business environment or the current state of play with respect to clean technology.

"India Horizonz provided high quality research and analysis, demonstrating a robust ability to gain access to key people in the market to enable us to understand the market drivers and India government policies towards renewable energy.

"It was important to us to go beyond statistics and official announcements to understand what was really happening and to get feasible advice about routes to market in India in an area which is only just developing.

"We were particularly impressed by India Horizonz's use of their networks to identify key players in renewable energy in India to adequately verify the clean technology landscape. They were able to gain access to influential people in government, NGOs and academia and interview them to supplement and enhance the research findings.

"We received recommendations about tangible steps we could take to explore the renewable energy opportunity in India further."

Grow Wellington is progressing its clean technology strategy for the region and is actively pursuing opportunities for Wellington renewable energy technology in India.
